Evans “ This Sentence Is Not Long Enough”

January 1, 2000

Nigel Evans, Member of Parliament for the Ribble Valley has today spoken with the family of Joshua Massey-Hodgkinson, the baby killed by his childminder.

Following the verdict, Mr Evans said,

“Clearly this sentence is not long enough, no sentence will bring baby Joshua back but the parents will want to see that justice is done.

“The judge has banned Wendy Barlow from looking after children for life and that is the right decision. The judge did what Ofsted should have done. Wendy Barlow should never have been in the position to look after any children.

“Once it was known that a registered child minder had a drink problem, this should have been brought to the attention of the family. She should have been struck off at this stage and the family would not have allowed her anywhere near their child.

“I do hope that the procedures will be looked at closely. There has to be a independent enquiry in order that no other Joshua’s are ever looked after by people who should simply never be registered child minders”
